Document Search by Key-Word/Phrase
last updated 02/10/2006 |

Most of the time, the researcher can use the Booklist.htm, Document_List.htm, or individual UFO.htm, PX.htm, Science.htm etc. pages to decide what essays to choose. In case those fail, a "last chance" is offered by selecting documents based on given KeyWords.
To search the archived articles in my /Documents/
folder by keyword/phrase, you must first download the Excel spreadsheet
containing the keyword database =>
After you do that, you then must un-zip it. If you don't have "zipping" software (always available from a *free* download site), then you can't use this (so don't bother going any further). And if you don't have MS-Excel on your PC, you can't use this workbook.
When opening the workbook, you will get a message regarding the embedded macros (i.e., VBA programming code that I wrote to do the searching). <Click> on the "Enable Macros" box. The workbook should then open to the "Search Input" worksheet. Type in an 'X' next to any keyword that you choose.
When you are done, <click> on the 'Tools' menu and choose 'Macro'=>'Macros'. Then <click> on the 'Search' macro. The results will be shown on the 'Search Results' worksheet. You will have to copy the Document name on the end of http://www.stealthskater.com/Documents/ to access that file. (I didn't include the <links> because the workbook was already at 20,000-MB without any more "bells&whistles").
If you accidentally erase some of the keywords on the 'Search Input' worksheet, use the macro "List_Keys' to refresh it. It will copy from the 'Database' worksheet which you should normally have no need to access. But I'm sure a few keys failed to get added to the database for whatever reason. And maybe some got added that shouldn't have been.
I wrote a 'Database_Update' macro that searches a given document (after it has been copied-and- pasted on the 'scratch sheet' worksheet) for the keywords listed on the top row of the Database. It spared me from having to manually read the document to search for keywords. Every once in a while a keyword is detected that should not have been (usually for spelling/grammar/syntax reasons). Sometimes you may get "false positives" in your search. It's not perfect -- it's just a tool.
You can customize the 'Database' worksheet and keep it for your own use. After all, you have already downloaded it to your computer. If you need to refresh it completely, just download another copy. You can also "Clear" the values in the 'Database' worksheet and substitute your own (for example, you are keeping track of your own archive). At any time during creating the database, use the 'List_Keys' and 'Search' macros to double-check your work.
More directions are included on the 'Instructions' worksheet if you need them. But most of the time, you will be using only the 'Search Input' worksheet and 'Search' macro.

The Man In The Glass (Dale Wimbrow, 1895-1954) When you get what you want in your struggle for self, and the World makes you king for a day; Just go to the mirror and look at yourself, and see what that man has to say. For it isn't your father or mother or wife whose judgment upon you must pass; The fellow whose verdict counts most in your life is the one staring back from the glass. Some people might think you're a straight-shootin' chum and call you a wonderful guy; But the Man in the Glass says you're only a bum if you can't look him straight in the eye. He's the fellow to please -- never mind all the rest! -- for he's with you all the way to the end; And you've already passed your most dangerous test if the guy in the glass is your friend. You may fool the whole World down the pathway of years and get pats on-the-back as you pass; But your final reward will be heartache and tears ... if you've cheated the Man in the Glass ! |
